What’s in the Deck #1: D.O.C.

This segment will feature music that is: a) difficult to find, b) quality, c) created by artists you overlooked.

First up, The D.O.C., the backbone of the N.W.A. movement, prolific ghostwriter for Dr. Dre, active contributor to Snoop Dogg & Eazy-E. Watch out for D.O.C. to be making some noise on the new Detox album.

No One Can Do It Better is a masterpiece because Dr. Dre’s production is on point, D.O.C.’s lyrics are calculated, and the album features a unique sound that can be classified in its own genre. Think Beastie Boys meets Eazy-E.

Verdict: Must Have

Tracy Lynn Curry (born June 20, 1968), known as The D.O.C., is an American rapper from Dallas, Texas. He was a member of the Fila Fresh Crew and a creative force behind the rap group N.W.A.

In 1989, The D.O.C. released his Dr. Dre-produced debut album, No One Can Do It Better. The album was very well received by critics, and sold very well, peaking at #20 on the Billboard 200. Allmusic gives the album a five-star rating and describes it as “an early landmark of West Coast Rap” as well as “an undeniable masterpiece”. The track Portrait Of A Masterpiece was remixed in the UK for Atlantic Records by CJ Macintosh and Eddie Gordon in 1991, becoming an underground anthem with DJ Sasha.
